After a Biopsy

Some tips on how to look after your biopsy site

 The biopsy type performed

Shave biopsy – superficial skin layer sampled. Blood vessels have been gently cauterised to minimize bleeding.
Please note the biopsy can remove the top of the skin lesion but this is NOT
adequate to remove the “roots” of a skin cancer.
Punch biopsy – circular “core” sample removed. There will be 1-2 stitches, and dressings covering them. Stitches stay in between 7-14 days depending on location. The appointment to remove them should have already been made.

How to look after your biopsy site

  1. Keep the white or brown dressings dry for a minimum of 48 hours.
  2. The area can then be rinsed with clean water in the shower. Cover it with a new dressing afterwards
  3. Keep the area out of the sun while it heals. UV exposure during healing triggers a temporary increase in pigmentation.

Dressing is soiled or is falling off?

  1. Remove the dressing, wash the wound gently with tap water and allow to dry.
  2. Apply Vaseline daily to prevent hard crusty wound edges.
  3. Cover with a clean dressing.

 Is the biopsy site infected?

30% of people carry bacteria within the pores. If the wound becomes red, painful, warm, discharges pus or fever develops, call us (08 9271 2522) as soon as possible. Our wound service operates from 9am to 9pm 7 days a week.

Is the biopsy site bleeding?

A biopsy site can occasionally bleed. Change dressing, apply pressure and a cold pack for 10 minutes. If it continues, please contact us.
